Morten Tyldum may Direct Sci-Fi Romance 'Passengers'

The sci-fi love story Passengers has always had a ton of promise just based on the premise and the stars it was able attract. Keanu Reeves had been attached the longest, with Reese Witherspoon and Rachel McAdams set to co-star with him at various stages. But the project could never take off into orbit, and all three have since left. Maybe having the Oscar-nominated director  The Imitation Game can lure them back?

Norwegian helmer Morten Tyldum is in talks to direct Passengers, which features a script penned by Jon Spaihts (Prometheus). He'd be taking over for Brian Kirk (Game of Thrones) who was in line to direct the film at one point. Here's the synopsis:

"Passengers takes place on a spacecraft transporting thousands of people to a distant colony planet and has a malfunction in one of its sleep chambers. As a result, a single passenger is awakened 90 years before anyone else. Faced with the prospect of growing old and dying alone, he eventually decides to wake up a second passenger, marking the beginning of what becomes a unique love story."

So basically this is going to be a centerpiece role for two stars, and chances are they'll be seeking another pair of A-listers for it. Tyldum should help make that search a lot easier. [THR]
