Here we go. The weeks of campaigning and schmoozing have all come down to this. This morning the nominations for the 87th Academy Awards were announced and much of what we expected to happen did happen, but there are also some significant shocks that will make the upcoming show very interesting, or less meaningful depending on who you ask.
Wes Anderson's The Grand Budapest Hotel led the way with nine nominations, tied with Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu's Birdman. Both films made it into the Best Picture field along with Whiplash, Selma, The Theory of Everything, The Imitation Game, American Sniper, and Richard Linklater's Boyhood which had six nominations total. American Sniper also performed well with six nominations, while The Imitation Game came away with eight.
And there's bound to be some controversy over a couple of decisions made this morning, specifically when it comes to the animation category and when it comes to overall diversity. The Lego Movie was shockingly left out of the Best Animated Feature race as lesser known films Songs of the Sea and The Tale of Princess Kaguya were selected. Also, the Academy could take some heat for the lack of praise for Selma, leaving out director Ava DuVernay and star David Oyelowo from the Martin Luther King Jr. drama. Also, the Roger Ebert documentary Life Itself was snubbed for Best Documentary, which is surprising given the acclaim it has received.
The success of The Grand Budapest Hotel is notable because it puts to bed the notion that early season movies don't get remembered at the end of the year. Clearly, Wes Anderson has crafted a film that has stuck in the minds of both audiences and industry insiders.
The 87th Annual Academy Awards will be announced on February 22nd.
