They've been pushing Brandon Routh's Ray Palmer character pretty hard since he debuted on Arrow this season, and to be perfectly honest he's not been my favorite part of the show. Primarily that's because I don't want to see him (or anybody) hook up with Felicity Smoak (Emily Bett Rickards), but also because he seems to be there only to set up a potential spinoff. Well that next phase may be right around the corner because we're now getting a look at Routh in the A.T.O.M. suit they've been teasing these last few weeks, and he looks pretty cool.
This version of Ray Palmer is somewhat different from the one we've seen in DC Comics. He's a billionaire who lost his wife to Slade Wilson (Manu Bennett), and has since gone on to buy Oliver Queen's former company, Queen Consolidated. He's since decided that becoming a superhero is the right path and has enlisted Felicity's help in designing it. In the most recent episode she finally decided to aid him, even though she fears he could get hurt or killed. This suit is also very different in appearance from the original, but presumably he'll still have the ability to shrink down to a subatomic level.
Routh will don the suit in full in the February 25th episode of Arrow titled "Nanda Parbat", and then will appear in a future episode of The Flash, which star Grant Gustin has teased in a new image.
