Rooney Mara Doesn't Think 'The Girl with the Dragon Tatoo' Sequels will Happen
As if it wasn't obvious enough that a sequel to David Fincher's The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo isn't happening, Rooney Mara just stuck an axe in it. She played the multi-pierced Lisbeth Salander in the film, but she tells E! Online that it's unlikely she'll have a chance to do it again...
“I don’t think it’s going to happen. I’m sad never to do it again, but it just doesn’t seem like it’s in the cards.”
No kidding. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo rode into 2011 riding a wave of incredible book sales and a Swedish film that made over $100M worldwide. As an R-rated thriller featuring extreme violence against women, Fincher's remake faced an uphill climb with American audiences, and the film underperformed badly. Sony had been expecting at least $300M to justify moving forward on adaptations of the next two books, but in the end it only grossed $230M. Fincher has since moved on, Daniel Craig isn't interested and reports were that his character could be written out, and in general there doesn't seem to be much of a demand for more.
I was no big fan of Fincher's film, but Hollywood could use more adult-oriented franchises so seeing this one end so quickly is disappointing.
