You've got to hand it to Matthew McConaughey for not taking on anything simple. Following Christopher Nolan's Interstellar he took on Gus Van Sant's "Suicide Forest" drama, Sea of Trees, which sees him starring alongside Naomi Watts and Ken Watanabe. In his next film he'll play antislavery Confederate rebel Newton Knight in Free State of Jones, and now we have the first image as production officially kicks off.
Written and directed by Gary Ross (The Hunger Games), Free State of Jones centers on Newton Knight, who led an armed rebellion against the Confederacy. Joined with other like-minded individuals he attempted to establish the "Free State of Jones" in Jones County, Mississippi at the height of the Civil War. Part of Knight's motivation was his marriage to a former slave, who be played by Belle and Beyond the Lights star, Gugu Mbatha-Raw.
Also starring Keri Russell and Mahershala Ali, Free State of Jones opens March 11th 2016.
