Kevin Smith may still hang up his camera for good some day, but for now he's in the midst of a creative streak. While films like Red State and Tusk didn't exactly set the world on fire, nor did they appeal to his most hardcore base, Smith has found a way to flex his filmmaking muscles while also giving something back to fans of the View Askewniverse.
Smith hit Facebook today with news that the long-awaited Clerks 3 would finally begin shooting this summer, targeting a May launch. The plan had been for it to film last year but issues developed with the funding. That's all been resolved now and it looks like Dante and Randall will be back harassing customers again soon. Can Jay and Silent Bob be far behind?
Actually no, they can't, because Smith also seems to have teased a sequel to his cult favorite (but wildly unsuccessful) 1995 comedy, Mallrats. The film starred Jason Lee, Jeremy London (remember him?), a young Ben Affleck, Shannen Doherty, Michael Rooker, plus Smith and Jason Mewes. It followed a couple of underachievers as they spent the day having misadventures in a shopping mall, and for a long time it was my favorite Smith film because of how dorky it was. However it was a little too dorky and had too many comic book references for audiences and nobody bothered to see it.
Smith is busy right now putting the finishing touches on Yoga Hosers, and he's got some other projects coming up, as well. But Clerks 3 and possibly Mallrats 2? It's like the '90s all over again. Now all we need is a sequel to Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back.
