'Power Rangers' Lands 'Project Almanac' Director Dean Israelite

Go go Power Rangers! The franchise best remembered for its Crayola-endorsed outfits is getting a big screen reboot in 2016, and while there isn't any cast to speak of yet a director may have been found. The Wrap reports that Dean Israelite, who broke through with the recent teen sci-fi flick Project Almanac, is in talks for the job.

With a nostalgia property like Power Rangers it helps to have a director who is a lifelong fan, and apparently that's one of the reasons Israelite "blew away studio execs" with his approach to the film. He'll be working off a script by Ashley Miller and Zack Stentz, known for blockbuster work on Thor and X-Men: First Class, so this will be the largest project in Israelite's career. He's also going to have a die-hard group of fans who have been following Power Rangers for two decades and will be expecting him to deliver. Here's an updated synopsis:

From a story by Executive Producer Roberto Orci (TRANSFORMERS, STAR TREK, AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2) and screenwriters Zack Stentz and Ashley Miller (X-MEN: FIRST CLASS, THOR) comes a modern reinvention of the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, a group of ordinary high school kids who find themselves infused with extraterrestrial powers and must harness those powers as a team to save the world.

Power Rangers is expected to open on July 22nd 2016.
