The films of Peruvian filmmaker Claudia Llosa may not be well-known here in America, which is a shame given how thought-provoking 2009's The Milk of Sorrow was. Hopefully she's about to become a bigger name stateside with the release of Aloft, her new drama that stars Jennifer Connelly, Cillian Murphy, and Melanie Laurent.
Connelly stars as Nana Kunning, a renowned healer and artist who abandoned her son (Murphy) twenty years earlier after being unable to cope with single parenthood. Everything changes when a young journalist sets out to reunite the two, but can their broken relationship be healed? This looks like the kind of soulful film those familiar with Llosa's work have come to expect. While the stylistic comparisons to Terrence Malick are frequent, Llosa has an approach that's really her own.
Aloft opens in theaters on May 22nd.
