Jason Reitman to Write and Direct Animated 'Beekle' for Dreamworks
Jason Reitman has had a rough go of it lately with the critically-panned Labor Day and Men, Women & Children, but that's not slowing him down in the least. He's currently developing a heist film titled I Only Rob Banks for My Family, and he's shooting a new series for Hulu. Now he's switching gears in a major way by moving to the field of animation.
Reitman will direct Beekle, an animated film based on Dan Santat's award-winning book, "The Adventures of Beekle: The Unimaginary Friend". Reitman will adapt the screenplay himself which centers on an imaginary friend gone off on a magical journey to find the perfect child companion. Here's the book's synopsis:
This magical story begins on an island far away where an imaginary friend is born. He patiently waits his turn to be chosen by a real child, but when he is overlooked time and again, he sets off on an incredible journey to the bustling city, where he finally meets his perfect match and-at long last-is given his special name: Beekle.
It's unclear when Reitman plans to shoot it, but this sounds like a solid comeback vehicle for him. He's also attached to direct The Possibilities, based on a book by the author of The Descendants. [Variety]
