New 'Batman v Superman' IMAX Trailer; Grant Morrison Takes Issue with Wonder Woman's Depiction

The recent Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice trailer that blew up Comic-Con and was released online may have been a hit with fans, but it isn't the version Warner Bros. is showing in IMAX theaters. A shorter, alternate version is playing in IMAX locations, and this cut doesn't waste time. It gets right to the action, specifically the explosive battle between Superman, Batman, and even Wonder Woman.

But not everyone is happy about the depiction of Wonder Woman that Zack Snyder's film presents. Legendary comics writer Grant Morrison. who has the graphic novel Wonder Woman: Earth One releasing later this year, that the aggressive Wonder Woman seen on screen is a far cry from the pacifist character William Marston created in 1941. Morrison tells Nerdist...

“I sat down and I thought ‘I don’t want to do this warrior woman thing. I can understand why [Zack Snyder & co] are doing it, I get all that, but that’s not what William Marston wanted, that’s not what he wanted at all! His original concept for Wonder Woman was an answer to comics that he thought were filled with images of blood-curdling masculinity, and you see the latest shots of Gal Gadot in the costume, and it’s all sword and shield and her snarling at the camera. Marston’s Diana was a doctor, a healer, a scientist. So I went back to those roots and just built it up again.”

He's not wrong, but that version of the character doesn't have the kind of cool factor needed for a blockbuster film, or even for a modern day movie trailer. And to be fair, Wonder Woman hasn't been a reflection of Marston's original vision in the comics for quite some time. There's always the chance we see more of the feminist icon Marston hoped for her to be when Patty Jenkins' solo Wonder Woman film opens in 2017.

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice opens March 25th 2016. Check out the trailer below.
