New 'Spider-Man' Film Lands 'Vacation' Reboot Writers

Having mostly penned comedies like both Horrible Bosses films, The Incredible Burt Wonderstone, and the upcoming Vacation reboot which they'll also direct, John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein don't seem like the obvious choice for superhero movies. However there they were on the shortlist to direct Marvel and Sony's Spider-Man movie, and while they didn't get the job they must have done something right.

According to Deadline, Daley and Goldstein will write the new Spider-Man movie which Jon Watts (Cop Car) will direct. Tom Holland is set to play the wall-crawler who will make his debut in next year's Captain America: Civil War. Spidey will then get his own solo film on July 28th 2017 which will be set during Peter Parker's high school years and will not be an origin story.

Daley and Goldstein previously wrote Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 for Sony, so it may be that previous relationship which helped them earn the gig. Whatever the reason, this is a big step up for the duo as Marvel tends to work with the same writers on multiple projects.
