According to "super" scooper El Mayimbe on the Meet the Movie Press podcast, Jones' role will be much more than just a Rebel soldier as previously reported. Instead, she would actually be playing the daughter of Boba Fett, the fearsome bounty hunter and arguably the most popular character in the Star Wars mythos.
So how would that work given that Jones is 31-years-old, and the story takes place roughly 20 years after Attack of the Clones, in which Fett was seen as a child? It could have to do with Fett being an unaltered clone (a terrible plot point, by the way), or perhaps he decided to use the cloning technology to advance his child's age. But to what purpose? Neither of these scenarios sound likely, though, and it may just be the story is flat out incorrect or made up out of whole cloth. Given the shaky source either case is possible.
However, giving Fett a child would be an interesting wrinkle to the Star Wars universe. We've already seen more of the mysterious Mandalorians in the prequel films and through the character of Sabine in the Star Wars Rebel animated series. Is it possible that Fett would have a child working alongside the Rebels to steal the Death Star plans? Or would she be working for the bounty hunters hired by Darth Vader to stop them?
None of this really computes, but the rumor is out there and we'll have to see how it plays out. Star Wars: Rogue One opens December 16th 2016 and stars Felicity Jones, Diego Luna, Ben Mendelsohn, Riz Ahmed, Forest Whitaker, and new addition Jonathan Aris (Sherlock) who was revealed as part of the cast a couple of days ago.
