Max von Sydow joins HBO's Game of Thrones' as the Three-Eyed Raven
There are so many roles to fill in HBO's Game of Thrones, some big some small, that you'd think casting announcements would happen on an almost daily basis. But they're actually pretty irregular, which makes any new additions to the show a really big deal, that and every character could prove to have a major impact. One such character that should be of some importance next season is the Three-Eyed Raven, who hasn't been seen since season four. When he returns he'll be played by a different actor, as the legendary Max von Sydow has joined the cast in that role.
The Oscar-nominated actor will be taking over for Struan Rodger, and the reason for the change hasn't been made clear. There wasn't any need for the character last season since the entire Bran Stark storyline went on a hiatus but it will be back for season six and the mystical Three-Eyed Raven, also known as Brynden Rivers, will be part of it.
Von Sydow has starred in dozens of films spanning more than sixty years. Everything from The Exorcist to Flash Gordon has been made better by his presence, and the 86-year-old actor remains busy. He most recently received an Academy Award nomination for his supporting performance in Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, and later this year he'll be seen in Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
