Sometimes when an actor or actress hits it big, they continue plowing the same territory in order to appease their fans. Nothing wrong with that; it's certainly worked out well for Melissa McCarthy. Her Bridesmaids co-star Kristen Wiig went in the polar opposite direction, and while her indie efforts like The Skeleton Twins and Welcome to Me didn't make a box office dent, they've definitely helped her grow as a more versatile actress. At this past Sundance her art house sensibilities were on full display in The Diary of a Teenage Girl, which is currently in theaters earning strong reviews (including mine), and Sebastian Silva's odd pregnancy dramedy, Nasty Baby. While the film has yet to gain a U.S. date, it's about to hit overseas and the first trailer has been released.
Silva, who hit Sundance a couple of years ago with Crystal Fairy and Magic Magic, wrote, directs, and co-stars alongside Wiig, Tunde Adebimpe, Reg E. Cathey, and Alia Shawkat. The story centers on a gay male couple who try to convince their best friend (Wiig) to help them have a baby. But things don't quite work out as planned, and their attempt at bringing life into the world leads to a tragic event.
Silva is one of my personal favorites, so I went into the film with extremely high expectations. However I walked away from it disappointed by the strange, dark turn it takes and never recovers from. Nasty Baby hits theaters October 23rd and VOD a week later.
