It's actually been awhile since Bryan Singer has had a hit outside of the X-Men universe. Jack the Giant Slayer didn't do so well, nor did Superman Returns, while Valkyrie is pretty good but hardly one of Tom Cruise's most memorable films. With the X-Men franchise in a better place than it has ever been under Singer's guidance, he's briefly stepping away to tackle an adaptation of Jules Verne's 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea.
Singer revealed the news on Instagram, as per usual, and promised he's going to continue as shepherd of the X-Men movies, too. This version of the underwater classic has nothing to do with the film David Fincher was attached to forever at Disney. Instead it comes from co-writers Rick Sordelet & Dan Studney with a story cooked up by Singer himself. Singer promises this retelling of Captain Nemo and his Nautilus crew will be "epic and emotional', as it's something of a passion project for him.
No word on when this would shoot but Singer's next film, X-Men: Apocalypse, opens May 27th 2016.
