At this point there isn't much left to say about Todd Haynes' Carol. It's a film that has received near universal acclaim for Haynes and stars Rooney Mara and Cate Blanchett. While it's currently out in limited release (you can read my review here), the film doesn't go wide for a few more weeks, and so here's one more gorgeous trailer.
The 1950s-set drama is based on Patricia Highsmith's book, The Price of Salt, and centers on the love affair between an unhappily married woman and a young shopgirl. But to think of it as simply a movie about a lesbian romance is to limit all of the issues Haynes touches upon, such as class and gender inequality.
Carol is in some theaters now and expands on Christmas Day.
