Leia Has Earned a New Title in 'Star Wars: the Force Awakens'

It was always a little weird that Leia kept being referred to as "Princess" after her home planet of Alderaan was blown up by the Death Star. She's a princess of what, exactly? A bunch of floating star dust? Well it looks like Leia has finally shed that title and earned a new one in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, according to J.J. Abrams' comments to EW...

“She’s referred to as General,” says director and co-writer J.J. Abrams. “But … there’s a moment in the movie where a character sort of slips and calls her ‘Princess.’”

Carrie Fisher will obviously be back as Leia, minus the cinnamon bun hairdo, and she says Leia isn't necessarily handling the pressure of leadership very well...

"Not easily,” Fisher says, describing Leia as, “solitary. Under a lot of pressure. Committed as ever to her cause, but I would imagine feeling somewhat defeated, tired, and pissed.”

So a minor reveal and not a completely unexpected one. Leia becomes one of the driving forces of the rebellion in the original trilogy, and naturally that would continue on for her. Her storyline is expected to be one of the most emotional, and of course will be tied closely to the fate of Han Solo.

Star Wars: the Force Awakens opens December 18th.
