New 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens' IMAX Poster; Lupita Nyong'o Talks Her CG Character, Maz Kanata
The first Star Wars: the Force Awakens IMAX poster that debuted last month gave us a distant look at Rey (Daisy Ridley) and her little android companion, BB-8. And it seems Rey has the IMAX corner all to herself once again as the latest one-sheet features her and BB-8 once more, starring off into the distance of her homeworld, Jakku.
Meanwhile, another new member of the franchise's cast is Oscar-winner Lupita Nyong'o, who plays the CG creation, Maz Kanata. The character has remained something of a mystery; heard in earlier trailers and seen on a recent poster. Nyong'o has revealed to EW some long-awaited details on Maz's place in the Star Wars universe...
"Her history is that she was a pirate for a long time. She's lived over a thousand years. She's had this watering hole for about a century, and it's like another bar that you'd find in a corner of the Star Wars universe."
So we'll never see Nyong'o's face but J.J. Abrams still praises her performance, and explains why they chose to use CG rather than practical effects for Maz...
"Maz needed to look and feel and be just like one of those creatures. And given her mobility, and given the role that she played, it became clear that that was one creature where we should use the tool of CG. But the performance was all Lupita. She was there on set, and we did capture sessions afterwards as well, and I can't say enough about working with her."
Star Wars: The Force Awakens opens December 18th.
