Boldly Go Into The First Trailer For 'Star Trek Beyond'

Ever since J.J. Abrams took over Star Trek back in 2009, the venerable sci-fi franchise, which will be celebrating its 50th anniversary next year, has seen a serious injection of action. Abrams has since moved on to direct the distinguished competition in Star Wars, but he's still involved with Star Trek as a producer, which explains why Star Trek Beyond was to premiere in front of 'The Force Awakens'. But after a German version leaked this morning Paramount decided it was pointless to wait and debuted the trailer today.

The influence of Fast & Furious director Justin Lin is immediately recognizable in the fast-paced, quick-cutting sequences. Set to the sounds of the Beastie Boys' "Sabotage", we see Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana and much of the returning cast, but we only hear Idris Elba's villain character in the background.

What this footage doesn't do is reveal anything of the plot which has been kept a tighter secret than that whole Khan fiasco from Star Trek Into Darkness. So we have no idea who Elba is playing or what is going on except that every member of the crew seems to be in danger from various alien species'.

Star Trek Beyond beams into theaters on July 22nd 2016.
