Single-Day Record Belongs to 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens' With $120M
If the $100M in presold tickets and $50M+ Thursday box office weren't enough of a clue the latest Star Wars film was going to be huge, then you need to start listening to the Force. Star Wars: The Force Awakens blasted away the record books on Friday with a single day total of more than $120M. That crushes the previous $91M record held by Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2, which it also bested in Thursday previews. Harry's wand has got nothing on a Jedi's lightsaber, clearly.
At this point the film seems like a shoe-in to beat the $208M weekend record set by Jurassic World earlier this year. Early projections by analysts and Disney suggest it could bank more than $225M with a high-end of $250M+. I'm a betting man and I'll take the over.
'The Force Awakens' is the first film to take in over $100M in a single day, and at this point it's very close to breaking the three-day record in only two days, which would be a phenomenal feat. Not only is it a box office hit already, but audiences loved it, granting J.J. Abrams' film with an 'A' Cinemascore. On Rotten Tomatoes it currently sits at 95% Fresh.
