Sadly, today's Academy Awards nominations were darkened by the unfortunate news of Alan Rickman's sudden passing, but as they say, "The show must go on". The nominees for the best Hollywood had to offer in 2015 were announced this morning, and it was absolutely dominated by two harrowing, thrilling survival films: The Revenant and Mad Max: Fury Road.
The Revenant earned a whopping twelve nominations, including most of the major categories including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Cinematography for Emmanuel Lubezki, and Best Actor for Leonardo DiCaprio, who many see as the odds-on favorite. It was also a glorious day for Mad Max: Fury Road as George Miller's post-apocalyptic film earned ten nominations, and like The Revenant it was a fixture in all of the technical categories, while also slotting in for Best Director and Best Picture.
Fanboys can start sending in their angry petitions now since Star Wars: The Force Awakens did not make it into the Best Picture category, but managed five nominations on the technical side. While Brie Larson's nomination for Best Actress was a lock, Room performed better than expected with Lenny Abrahamson getting a Director nod, the film making the cut for Best Picture, and also earning a nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay.
A little surprising was Mark Ruffalo's Best Supporting nod for Spotlight while Michael Keaton was left out completely. The film did extremely well overall with six nominations, just shy of the seven earned by Ridley Scott's The Martian.
