Is it possible George Miller has been blowing exhaust in our faces about the future of Mad Max: Fury Road? He's consistently spoken about a desire to tell more stories set in that world, on the big screen and other forms of media, while at the same time saying he'd like to take a break to direct something small. That's understandable, and talks with Warner Bros. had apparently begun on what could come next for Tom Hardy's "road warrior". Well, now Miller is saying something completely different, and he sounds pretty emphatic about it.
While speaking with Page Six, Miller says flat out that he's finished making 'Mad Max' movies. And that's pretty much it...
“I won’t make more ‘Mad Max’ movies. I’ve shot in Australia in a field of wild flowers and flat red earth when it rained heavily forever. We had to wait 18 months and every return to the US was 27 hours. Those ‘Mad Maxes’ take forever. I won’t do those anymore.”
So what about all of that talk about Charlize Theron's "compelling" Furiosa being part of a spinoff? What of the multiple story ideas he had for Mad Max? As of now it sounds like they are all off the table. Or is it possible he'd hand the reins over to someone else? He recently suggested to Studio360 that he would be more than open to the idea. When asked about it his response was "Yes, of course"!
He went on to add, "People are directing younger and younger, they're getting a real sense of cinema very, very early, and there's some great directors out there. You see films every day and you know it's a good film because you get excited by the possibility of cinema. You walk out of the movies thinking, 'Oh, anything's possible!'"
What do you think? Warner Bros. hasn't said anything one way or another about a 'Mad Max' sequel, and maybe this is a ploy by Miller to get their attention? Who knows? Would you want to see anyone other than Miller direct it?
