J.J. Abrams and Bad Robot just pulled some ultimate "Mystery Box" ninja stuff on all of us. Those who attended showings of Michael Bay's 13 Hours were treated to one heck of a surprise, a trailer for a film titled 10 Cloverfield Lane, confirmed as a sequel to Abrams and Matt Reeves' 2008 monster flick, Cloverfield!
The film was directed by Dan Trachtenberg and stars John Goodman, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, and John Gallagher Jr. If that group sounds familiar it's because we've reported on the film as it was going under different titles, such as The Cellar and Valencia. Abrams confirmed the connection to Cloverfield in a statement...
"The idea came up a long time ago during production. We wanted to make it a blood relative of Cloverfield. The idea was developed over time. We wanted to hold back the title for as long as possible.”
So what exactly does that mean? A look at the trailer doesn't give any direct connections between the two films, nor does the synopsis that presumably is still accurate. Winstead plays a woman who awakens from a car accident to find she is being held captive in the underground bunker of a man who thinks the outside world has been destroyed. Is it possible he's talking about the damage inflicted by the Cloverfield monster?
Another reason to get excited? Damien Chazelle, writer/director of Whiplash, helped co-write the screenplay. 10 Cloverfield Lane opens March 11th.
