Ava DuVernay Sought For 'A Wrinkle In Time' And 'Intelligent Life'
How in-demand is Selma director Ava DuVernay right now? Marvel courted her to direct Black Panther and she was able to turn it down when the project didn't suit her. Right now she's busy developing drama series Queen Sugar, which will air on Oprah's OWN network, but there are two major feature projects that she is also in the mix for.
According to Deadline, DuVernay is being courted by Disney to direct their adaptation of A Wrinkle In Time, which has Frozen co-writer/co-director Jennifer Lee penning the script. The story is based on the first of Madeleine L’Engle's books about a young girl whose scientist father goes missing after working on a mysterious government project known as a tesseract.
Meanwhile, the folks at Amblin want DuVernay to helm Intelligent Life, which is the sci-fi project from Jurassic World director Colin Trevorrow and co-writer Derek Connolly. Trevorrow seemed like the obvious choice to direct it himself, but he's busy with numerous projects right now, such as The Book of Henry, Jurassic World 2 (as a writer and producer), and Star Wars: Episode IX. Intelligent Life, which originally was titled The Ambassdador, centers on “a UN worker in a department that was to represent humankind in the event of alien contact. The man falls in love with a mysterious woman who turns out to be an alien."
It's unclear if DuVernay is interested in either project. She's one of the few directors out there who can really call her own shots, and she may want to continue pursuing films that speak specifically to her.
