Gerard Butler Wants War In The 'Gods Of Egypt' Super Bowl Spot

Tonight while hundreds of million of people around the world are watching to see if newly-crowned NFL MVP Cam Newton can bring the Super Bowl to Carolina, Hollywood will be busy trying to sell their biggest movies of 2016.  The most expensive night of the year for ad placement means they'll be pulling out all of the stops to make that money well-spent, and in the case of the already-maligned Gods of Egypt the task is to turn around its negative perception.

However, the Super Bowl spot for the film just re-confirms that it's a giant, campy mess with some curious casting. Directed by Alex Proyas (Dark City), who has already apologized for the white washed casting decisions, the film stars Gerard Butler, Chadwick Boseman, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Elodie Yung, Brenton Thwaites, Geoffrey Rush, and Courtney Eaton in the story of a war between the gods and humans. Here's the synopsis:

"In this spectacular action-adventure, the survival of mankind hangs in the balance as an unexpected mortal hero Bek [Brenton Thwaites] undertakes a thrilling journey to save the world and rescue his true love. In order to succeed, he must enlist the help of the powerful god Horus [Nikolaj Coster-Waldau] in an unlikely alliance against Set [Gerard Butler], the merciless god of darkness, who has usurped Egypt’s throne, plunging the once peaceful and prosperous empire into chaos and conflict. As their breathtaking battle against Set and his henchmen takes them into the afterlife and across the heavens, both god and mortal must pass tests of courage and sacrifice if they hope to prevail in the epic final confrontation."

Gods of Egypt opens February 26th.
