While waiting for Pride
and Prejudice and Zombies to start, I was preparing myself for what I thought
was going to be entertaining, funny, scary time at the movies. So what did I
think of it?
The movie felt confusing and unable to commit to a single plot. This is unfortunate
because I feel like this really could’ve been something special if there was a
different writer and director. For example, Joss Whedon found a way to make
the Western and Sci-fi genres work together when he created Serenity. Pride
and Prejudice and Zombies never found a way to merge both worlds successfully.
The script was probably my biggest gripe with the film. I
wish the writers would have committed more time to making the story accessible to
everyone. Another frustrating thing about this movie was its inconsistency with how
people are changed into Zombies or how Zombies are killed. One character in
particular was infected and we see the teeth marks on the characters hand but
there is no transformation. The post credit scene was the biggest disappointment
because it contradicts what happens earlier in the film. The film does capture
element from the Jane Austen original but only on the surface.
The cast in did well with the script and direction that was
presented to them. I loved Sally
Phillips as Mrs. Bennet! She was funny and did a great job of portraying the
overbearing mother. Matt Smith as Parson
Collins was another scene-stealer. The way he pursued one Bennet sister one after another
was a welcomed outlet from all the craziness in the film. Mr. Darcy (Sam Riley) and
Elizabeth (Lily James) were decent and had good chemistry. Lena Headey as Lady Catherine also brought excitement
to the screen.
The action in the film felt forced and out of place.. When the Bennet sisters charged in to
slaughter Zombies, there was an overuse of Matrix-slow motion effect that broke
the pacing in the preceding scene. The fight scene between Mr. Darcy and
Elizabeth was jarring and felt unnecessary. I was actually disappointed that
the makeup and effects for the Zombies. It came off very cartoony. I didn’t enjoy
the film as much as I wanted to. If you
are fan of this genre, then you might enjoy it.
I think you would you would be better off watching The Walking Dead reruns.
