Disney's first animated Marvel film, Big Hero 6, surpassed expectations in just about every way. Not only did it earn more than $650M worldwide, but it also went on to win the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature. While there have been rumblings of a sequel, especially from fans, that doesn't appear to be happening any time soon. Instead, the heroes will appear in a TV series that will serve as the film's official follow-up.
Walt Disney has announced that instead of a theatrical sequel, Big Hero 6's adventures will continue in a series to air on Disney XD, which also happens to be the home of Star Wars Rebels and Guardians of the Galaxy.
The Big Hero 6 series will pick up right where the film left off, with Hiro now enrolled in the San Fransokyo Institute of Technology, just as his older brother Tadashi was. So during the day he's a mild-mannered student dealing with being the young kid on campus, and at night he's teaming up with Wasabi, Honey Lemon, Fred, Go Go, and Baymax to battle crime. The series is expected to debut in 2017.
