While $158M worldwide doesn't sound like much compared to the billions some other franchises command, Sony's adaptation of R.L. Stine's Goosebumps was still an unquestionable success. At a cost of only $58M, the horror-comedy hit its target audience of young adults familiar with Stine's popular, long-running novels, and now Sony is keen on bringing them back for more scares.
THR reports that Sony has gone ahead and green lit a Goosebumps sequel, with Rob Letterman back to direct, along with screenwriter Darren Lemke. The first film had a bunch of Stine's literary creatures springing from the pages of his novels and into the real world where they proceeded to terrorize a suburban neighborhood. Jack Black played Stine, and as of right now he's not confirmed although Sony wants him back.
Often we see complaints that Hollywood doesn't make enough of these mid-level movies anymore, especially the ones targeted at teens. As long as Sony is smart and keeps the budget low, there's every reason to think that Goosebumps can be a long-term staple for them.
