Marvel Heroes Will Be Part Of Sony's Solo Spider-Man Film
After one successful and well-received The Amazing Spider-Man movie, Sony got cold feet after tanking hard on the sequel. So rather than proceed with their hastily-made franchise plans, they struck an unexpected deal with Marvel to bring Spidey to the MCU, with a brand new Peter Parker played by Tom Holland. And now as the character prepares to swing into action as part of Captain America: Civil War, it's looking like other MCU characters will be joining his solo film.
Kevin Feige spilled the beans in a conversation with EW, saying “He is in the universe now, and the fun of the universe is that characters go back and forth.”
Why is this newsworthy? Well, because while Marvel is producing and developing the Spidey film, it belongs to Sony. So what are the chances of Marvel putting their big guns in a movie they don't technically own? Probably not all that great. Plus, if you want to get technical about it, it's not even certain that an actor under a Marvel contract can appear in Sony's movie unless something gets worked out first. Think how much attention is paid to every single contracted appearance by Chris Evans, Samuel L. Jackson, Robert Downey Jr., and others. This would only complicate things further.
So chances are what will happen is that Marvel will allow use of some lower-tier characters. Maybe Cobie Smulders stops by so SHIELD can give Spidey their best wishes? 'Civil War' co-director Joe Russo has an even better idea, though,...
“Let’s just say … Great Lakes Avengers."
Uh, yes please! How about a Spider-Man and Squirrel Girl team-up?
The solo Spider-Man film arrives July 7th 2017.
