Rumor: Next X-Men Movie To Revisit The Dark Phoenix Saga?
Oh my God, I feel bad for whoever sits through these dreadful episodes of Heroic Insider just to hear the tiniest kernel of (likely) made-up bullshit. Is there a such thing as hazard pay for bloggers? Anyway! A new rumor from Heroic Hollywood's show suggests a couple of things related to Fox's X-Men universe. One: that there will be a sequel to X-Men: Apocalypse, and two: that the storyline will center around the classic "Dark Phoenix Saga".
At this point there's no guarantee to even be a sequel to X-Men: Apocalypse, or at least not a true sequel. The film introduces a number of new characters, younger versions of X-Men we've previously met such as Cyclops, Storm, and Jean Grey, so obviously there will be some kind of continuation. Last we heard, James McAvoy might be heading over to the upcoming New Mutants film as Xavier, with Alexandra Shipp joining him as Storm. Right now it does seem as if New Mutants is taking center stage, but that could always change.
And what about the "Dark Phoenix Saga"? Didn't Bryan Singer already tackle that one? Well...no, that was Brett Ratner, who fouled it up something fierce with X-Men: The Last Stand after Singer had left the franchise. To be fair, Singer did seem to tease the Dark Phoenix when talking about the reintroduction of Jean Grey, who is now played by Game of Thrones' Sophie Turner. He told EW...
“And Jean she has not only has her telekenisis and her telepathy but she also knows inherently that something darker and more powerful is growing inside her and she doesn’t quite know what it is.”
Since the X-Men timeline has been rebooted in a sense, revisiting it may not be out of the realm of possibility. But is it actually a good idea just to try and fix something that no longer even counts? Rehashing ideas is one thing but this is pretty ridiculous, and just because Singer and producer Simon Kinberg want a do-over doesn't mean Fox will sign off on it.
With Singer set to direct 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, chances are we are a long way off before any details on the film emerge. We don't even know if Singer will direct the next movie, as there is a lot of turnover going on with the franchise right now. So we'll see what happens. Fox's X-Men universe is in flux right now and predicting anything would be foolish.
