After everything that he went through with the Pacific Rim sequel, Guillermo Del Toro has been lining up other projects on a much smaller scale. While we've heard of a few potential moves he could make, the one that is definitely next is a Cold War era love story that we recently learned would star Octavia Spencer and Sally Hawkins. Well now we're beginning to learn more, and as usual with Del Toro the story is a lot weirder than it seemed.
A report over at The Tracking Board says the 1963-set story, apparently titled The Shape of Water, involves a romance between a mute janitor (Hawkins) and an amphibious man held captive in a lab. When they fall in love she devises a plot to set him free. Richard Jenkins is in talks to play the neighbor who helps her out with the plan. Also considering a role in the film is Michael Stuhlbarg, although it's unclear if that will be for the amphibious love interest.
Officially, the film is being described as "an other-worldly story, set against the backdrop of Cold War era America circa 1963. A mysterious and magical journey from master storyteller Guillermo del Toro."
This one's being backed by Fox Searchlight, so expect it to be a reasonably small film. Doubtful it even reaches the scope of Crimson Peak, a film that divided audiences and critics alike.
