1. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows (review here)- $35.2M
The Ninja Turtles may have a hard shell but their soft underbelly is definitely showing. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows opened with $35.2M, a far cry from its predecessors $45M bow in 2014. Ouch. As someone who liked the first one and enjoyed the sequel, it's tough to see the franchise go down so quickly. By far this latest film is receiving better reviews overall, and we may be looking at a situation where a well-received sequel does worse because audiences don't want to get burned a second time. Considering the first movie was powered largely by families and young kids, the parents have clearly decided to put their foots down this time. On the plus side, the film is doing well overseas with $34M, and it's likely to be a huge hit in home release. I wouldn't count out more Turtle flicks in the future, especially since everybody NEEDS to see Tyler Perry's Baxter Stockman turn into a mutant fly. Am I right? It's a must.
2. X-Men: Apocalypse- $22.3M/$116.4M
Having already massively underperformed in its debut, X-Men: Apocalypse took an apocalyptic 66% tumble this week, earning $22.3M. Granted, X-Men: Days of Future Past did pretty much the same thing two years ago, but it had a much bigger opening and could "afford" it. But these are all domestic numbers, and disappointing though they may be, the film still has over $400M worldwide due to a healthy overseas market. They love their mutants everywhere but here, apparently.
3. Me Before You (review here)- $18.2M
Because more than teenaged boys go to the movies, the counter-programming slot was filled by the romantic drama, Me Before You, starring Game of Thrones' Emilia Clarke as a caretaker to a sullen rich guy, paralyzed in an accident. The film entered with a lot of buzz, some of it good from fans of Jojo Moyes' novel; some of it bad from disability advocates angry over its perceived message that disabled people have nothing to live for. Their protests probably didn't have much effect on the box office, since it snagged a strong $18.2, with $7M more overseas. That's not bad for this kind of material dropped in the middle of blockbuster season. And since there aren't a ton of movies in this genre coming up it could stick around for a while. It doesn't have a chance of hitting The Fault In Our Stars' $307M(!!!), though.
4. Alice Through the Looking Glass- $10.6M/$50.7M
There's no upside for Disney and Alice Through the Looking Glass, their first big live-action fairy tale flop. Oz the Great and Powerful wasn't great but at least it did nearly $500M. 'Alice' won't come close, not with $176M worldwide after two weeks.
5. The Angry Birds Movie- $9.7M/$86.6M
6. Captain America: Civil War- $7.5M/$388.9M
7. Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising- $4.7M/$48.5M
8. Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping (review here)- $4.6M
It would be generous to call Lonely Island's Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping a one-hit wonder, but honestly it's more like a never-was. The musical mockumentary starring Andy Samberg and a cast of celebrity cameos opened with only $4.6M, and it will probably be out of theaters in two weeks. So if you have any plans on seeing it, do it now. Maybe it's the genre audience aren't fans of? 'Popstar' is pretty darn funny, but so was Walk Hard back in 2007, and that film opened with only $4.1M on its way to $20M. 'Popstar' will be lucky to hit that number, especially since there isn't a high overseas demand for it.

10. The Nice Guys- $3.5M/$29.1M
