Kim Ji-woon is one of South Korea's most accomplished filmmakers, having successfully made an impression here with his bizarre The Good, The Bad, The Weird and his deliciously dark I Saw the Devil. Unfortunately, he made the mistake of trying to go mainstream Hollywood with the atrocious Arnold Schwarzenegger flick, The Last Stand, which did so poorly that he's now gone back to something more in his wheelhouse.
The first trailer for Ji-woon's next film, The Age of Shadows, has arrived and it finds the director in period thriller territory. Starring Song Kang-ho (Snowpiercer) and set in the 1920s, the film centers on members of a radical anti-Japanese resistance group known as the Heroic Corps that existed during Japan's colonization of Korea. Here's the synopsis:
Set in the late 1920s, The Age of Shadows follows the cat-and-mouse game that unfolds between a group of resistance fighters led by Gong’s character, trying to bring in explosives from Shanghai to destroy key Japanese facilities in Seoul, and Japanese agents trying to stop them. Song plays a talented Korean-born Japanese police officer who was previously in the independence movement himself and is thrown into a dilemma between the demands of his reality and the instinct to support a greater cause.
There's no stateside distributor for The Age of Shadows yet but it opens in South Korea this September. Hopefully we'll get it on our shores soon after. Check out two different versions of the trailer below.
