Since he hit the scene with his insightful, funny, and ultimately very revealing documentary Super Size Me, Morgan Spurlock has struggled to have the same kind of impact. While some docs were entertaining, such as The Greatest Movie Ever Sold and Comic-Con Episode IV: A Fan's Hope, they didn't leave much of a mark on the topics Spurlock was interested in exploring. Other films were just plain awful, almost comically so, such as Where in the World is Osama Bin Laden? and One Direction: This is Us. The best things he's ever done may be his work in TV on series such as 30 Days and CNN's Morgan Spurlock Inside Man, which allow him to pursue more journalistic efforts.
So what's next on the big screen for Spurlock? He's moving away from docs into feature territory with a film based on the life of celebrity talent agent, Sue Mengers. Deadline reports Spurlock's production company has snapped up the rights to Brian Kellow's best-selling biography, Can I Go Now: The Life of Sue Mengers, Hollywood’s Superagent, with plans for Spurlock to co-write and direct. Mengers broke through the all-boys-club of talent agents in the 1960s, attaining a roster of some of Hollywood's biggest stars including Barbra Streisand, Gene Hackman, Candice Bergen, Michael Caine, Dyan Cannon, Cher, Nick Nolte, Joan Collins, Brian De Palma and Faye Dunaway. The film will track the many ups and downs of Mengers' career and the big personality that always had her at the center of attention. A few years ago Bette Midler opened a one-woman play on Broadway in which she played Mengers.
Spurlock is working on the script Jeremy Chilnick and hopes to have it ready by this fall. His greatest challenge may be finding just the right actress to portray Mengers and her famous cliente.
