New 'Star Trek Beyond' IMAX Poster Goes To The Final Frontier

While there's been a little bit of a flap between the cast of Star Trek Beyond and original Trekker George Takei over Sulu being revealed as gay, that's just a sideshow before next week's main event. The third film in the relaunched franchise looks to be the biggest yet with Fast & Furious director Justin Lin on board, and to show just how far the movies have come a new IMAX poster features the Enterprise blasting into the final frontier.

Don't expect to see the ship around for long, though, because it takes a pretty serious pounding (it gets destroyed more than the SHIELD helicarrier) in the trailers we've seen. The crew faces off against a brand new threat, an enemy known as Krall, played by Idris Elba. Sofia Boutella (Kingsman: The Secret Service) co-stars as Jaylah, an unlikely ally in the fight for survival.

Here's the official synopsis:

“Star Trek Beyond,” the highly anticipated next installment in the globally popular Star Trek franchise, created by Gene Roddenberry and reintroduced by J.J. Abrams in 2009, returns with director Justin Lin (“The Fast and the Furious” franchise) at the helm of this epic voyage of the U.S.S. Enterprise and her intrepid crew.  In ³Beyond,” the Enterprise crew explores the furthest reaches of uncharted space, where they encounter a mysterious new enemy who puts them and everything the Federation stands for to the test.

Star Trek Beyond opens July 22nd.
