'Ocean's Eight' Adds Anne Hathaway And Rihanna To The Team
It's good to know that the recent failure of Ghostbusters won't impact other female-led reboots, and perhaps that's a sign of progress that all such films won't be held accountable when one under-performs. And so the all-female Ocean's Eleven spinoff, Ocean's Eight, keeps moving right along with three more big names added to the already impressive roster: Anne Hathaway, Rihanna, and rapper Awkwafina.
The trio join Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett, Mindy Kaling, and Helena Bonham Carter, giving it a total of eight lady thieves looking to rob the Met Gala of an expensive necklace. If someone seems to be missing that would be Elizabeth Banks, who was said to be joining the film some weeks back, but is mysteriously absent from Deadline's story. Perhaps it was an oversight? We'll find out soon enough. Gary Ross is directing and there's room for stars of the most recent trilogy, such as George Clooney, Matt Damon, and Brad Pitt, to make cameos. Since Bullock is playing the sister of Clooney's Danny Ocean, that would make some sense.
Chalk this up to another major role for Rihanna, who recently shot Luc Besson's Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets. Awkwafina aka Nora Lum, was last seen in Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising. Filming on Ocean's Eight is to begin this October, so we'll probably see it in theaters next year.
