Live-action Western in the modern era don't really have the best track record, but The Magnificent Seven managed to buck that trend with an ornery $35M debut. Then this isn't really your typical Western, is it? While it may be based on the classic film from 1960, this one plays more like your typical Denzel Washington action flick. He's surrounded by an appealing, crowd-pleasing cast that includes Chris Pratt and Ethan Hawke, plus there's some international flavor in there with Lee Byung-hun part of the team. So we could see this play well both domestically and abroad.
2. Storks- $21.8M
Sony Animation's Storks opened with $21.8M, which isn't terrible but far from what the studio has done with other animated movies over the last few years. Basically, don't look for this to launch a franchise like Hotel Transylvania or Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs did.
