Depp would play former LAPD detective Rodney Poole, a rising star on the force until he accused a fellow cop of being involved in the slaying of Biggie Smalls. He got no support from the department and so he turned private detective, looking into the deaths of Biggie and Tupac which have always been intertwined. Somebody should have told this guy both rappers are living on a deserted island along with Elvis and Andy Kaufman. I thought everybody knew that? Poole's work was chronicled in the 2002 novel "Labyrinth" by Randall Sullivan, which has been adapted by actor Christian Contreras.
At the helm will be Brad Furman, who most recently directed Pablo Escobar drama The Infiltrator, which was backed by the same people behind this movie. Honestly, I don't know if this is a good move for Depp or not. Nothing he does seems to matter at this point. He's had a string of underwhelming films and terrible press. It's possible nothing can help him rebound other than Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, but we shall see.
