In case you missed all of the Instagram pics of dogs made to look like Donald Trump, women dressed as slutty Hillary Clinton, or the plethora of David S. Pumpkins costumes (Please let that end quickly), today is Halloween. So pretty much every website will have lists of all the horror movies they think you should check out while ignoring the trick-or-treaters ringing your doorbell. Well, good luck checking those lists out (I'm too lazy for that mess this year. Go watch The Exorcist and be happy.), but I'd rather point you to an acclaimed horror that's coming up in a few weeks.
Perfectly-timed to coincide with Halloween, a new trailer has dropped for The Eyes of My Mother, Nicolas Pesce's black & white chiller that had audiences quaking in their boots at Sundance. The film centers on a young girl whose familiarity with gore from a young age manifests in horrible ways as an adult. Who could've predicted such a thing? Here's the synopsis:
In their secluded farmhouse, a mother, formerly a surgeon in Portugal, teaches her daughter, Francisca, to understand anatomy and be unfazed by death. One afternoon, a mysterious visitor shatters the idyll of Francisca’s family life, deeply traumatizing the young girl, but also awakening unique curiosities. Though she clings to her increasingly reticent father, Francisca’s loneliness and scarred nature converge years later when her longing to connect with the world around her takes on a dark form. Shot in crisp black and white, the haunting visual compositions evoke its protagonist’s isolation and illuminate her deeply unbalanced worldview. Genre-inflected, but so strikingly unique as to defy categorization, writer/director Nicolas Pesce’s feature debut allows only an elliptical presence in Francisca’s world, guiding our imaginations to follow her into peculiar, secret places.
