1. Boo! A Madea Halloween- $16.6M/$52M
So maybe we should've reviewed Boo! A Madea Halloween? Nah. Apparently it didn't matter because Tyler Perry has managed to defeat Tom Cruise and Tom Hanks over two consecutive weeks. The Halloween comedy dropped 41% from last week and scored $16M for a total of $52M. That's nearly triple its production budget. At this rate its shaping up to be one of Perry's biggest Madea films, and likely means we'll be getting them every year again. Whomp whomp.
2. Inferno (review)- $15M
Nobody's too excited over the $15M domestic debut of Inferno, Ron Howard and Tom Hanks' third adaptation of Dan Brown's Robert Langdon novels. It's a far cry from the $77M open of The Da Vinci Code, which was fueled by the novel being a global phenomenon, and the $46M of Angels & Demons. On the plus side, these movies have always been big internationally and this one is no different with $132M earned overseas already. That's not too bad, but is still disappointing overall. There has been zero buzz for this movie and I maintain that the window closed on the franchise years ago. Doubtful Sony wants to move forward on Brown's other Langdon novels, "The Lost Symbol" and the upcoming "Origin".

Overseas, it was Marvel's Doctor Strange that conjured up a whopping $86M. This is a typical release pattern for the studio and we can find the good Doctor casting his spell over stateside theaters next week.
Moonlight (review) also continues to impress in its second weekend. Barry Jenkins' long-awaited followup to Medicine for Melancholy expanded to 36 theaters and earned $900K for a $25K per site average. Over two weeks the potential Oscar contender has $1.4M, and with a long awards run coming it should fare very well for A24.
