'Edge Of Tomorrow 2' Won't Be Your Typical Sequel

Doug Liman has lined up a ton of projects lately, from Justice League Dark to an adaptation of Chaos Walking with Daisy Ridley, and his latest, sci-fi film Unearthed. But the most exciting may be a sequel to Edge of Tomorrow, the awesome time-looping action flick starring Tom Cruise. While we know Cruise and co-writer Christopher McQuarrie had ideas for the film, which they have undoubtedly raised with new writers  Joe Shrapnel and Anna Waterhouse (Race), precious little about the story has been known until now.

Speaking with Collider, Liman revealed that Edge of Tomorrow 2 won't just be your typical sequel, but will be told in a way befitting the time travel gymnastics displayed in the original...

“That is the only sequel that I’m considering doing, and it’s because first of all the story is so amazing—much better than the original film, and I loved and loved the original film—and second of all, it’s a sequel that’s a prequel.”

Sounds pretty cool, although it still doesn't tell us much. Does it mean we'll be getting a ton of flashbacks prior to the alien invasion? The last film ended with Cruise's character resetting the time loop all the way back to where the story began, so are we going to see what happens before that this time? Or just from a different perspective? Whatever happens, it will be big enough to reunite Cruise with Emily Blunt, whose performance as tough-as-nails Sergeant Rita Rose Vrataski earned some of the best reviews of her career. Given the  crammed schedules of everyone involved don't expect to see Edge of Tomorrow 2 for a few years at least.
