While there may not be a ton of news on Marvel's big screen heroes, New York Comic-Con has given them the chance to really lean in on the Netflix corner of the MCU. Not only did we get the first trailer for the upcoming Iron Fist series, but we also have news on Jon Bernthal in The Punisher, and the reveal of who will be playing the baddie in The Defenders. And damn, what a choice they made.
First up, Sigourney Weaver has been confirmed to play the villain in The Defenders. How do we know? Well, there's this image (via Deadline) of her on stage with the rest of the team, which happens to be our first shot of Charlie Cox (Daredevil), Krysten Ritter (Jessica Jones), Mike Colter (Luke Cage), and Finn Jones (Iron Fist) together in the same spot...
And then there's this statement by Marvel exec (and overrated comic book writer) Jeph Loeb, singing her praises...
"Marvel is honored to have an actress of her caliber and status join what is already our biggest show ever! She is by definition a class act."
Can't argue with him there. As for her role, that much remains unclear. Prior rumors suggested the demonic villain known as Mephisto would be the team's supernatural threat. Typically he's seen as male but would it make much difference if they did some gender-bending on the role? Probably not. The Defenders will begin shooting in a few weeks.
So in case that wasn't big enough news, we also learned that Deborah Ann Woll will be reprising her Daredevil role as Karen Page in The Punisher, which stars Jon Bernthal. The gun-toting vigilante was introduced in Daredevil's second season so it makes some storyline sense, but otherwise we have no idea why she'd want to hang around Frank Castle again. Fan-favorite Jon Bernthal, who plays the title role of Frank Castle/The Punisher, introduced Deborah Ann Woll to the fans, announcing that she will be joining him in Marvel’s The Punisher, where she will reprise the role of Karen Page, whom viewers first met in Marvel’s Daredevil.
