Might the long-running, already-legendary troubles of The Crow remake finally be coming to an end? It seems that question gets asked every few months with each new twist, only for the answer to inevitably be "Nope, that shit's got a long ways to go yet." It has been quiet lately on that front, though. We haven't heard anything since the film left the financially-devastated Relativity for Davis Films, who promptly renamed it The Crow Reborn. Jason Momoa is the latest in a long chain of actors who have been attached to the lead role, while director Corin Hardy is still on board, despite having a shaky relationship with the film himself.
The latest update comes from Forbes who caught up with Rings director F. Javier Gutierrez, once eyed as The Crow remake's director and now an exec-producer. He says the project is being developed as an R-rated movie with a tight $40M budget...
"With The Crow, I haven’t talked to them in a while so I don’t know what is going on with that, but we are going to do an R-rated movie. I come from Europe, I’m very dark so I’m going to go for it. If any movie has to be R-rated then it’s The Crow. That’s how I got James O’Barr, the creator of The Crow, involved in the project because he said that if R-rated is the way that I wanted to go, he’s in. Even though I’m not directing it now, when I was going to be doing that I explained to the producers that they had to read and understand the comic book and not make the film a PG-13 version because it would make no sense. Some movies are for young people, I get it and maybe you can do it, but this movie is not necessarily for those young people and toning it down would give you a ghost of what The Crow should be."
Okay, something to be concerned about. That Gutierrez, an exec-producer on the movie, hasn't heard anything in a while tells you that nothing's going on with it at this moment. Hardy was supposed to begin shooting in January but that never happened, and he's soon to be busy directing The Conjuring 2 spinoff, The Nun. So he won't be thinking about The Crow for quite some time if at all. Hardy has left the project before, and may just decide to move on again.
