Matt Reeves Calls His Version Of Batman A "Tortured Soul"

It took a bit of scrambling after Ben Affleck suddenly dropped out of directing The Batman, but Warner Bros. eventually found their man to replace him. War for the Planet of the Apes director Matt Reeves eventually signed on for Batman's first solo movie since Christopher Nolan wrapped up his epic trilogy. Reeves remains contractually bound to 'Apes' into the summer, so shooting won't begin until next year at the earliest, but he's already begun thinking about what his take on the Dark Knight will be.  He tells the Los Angeles Daily News...

“It’s a strange thing to be involved in the two franchises which were the two that I was connected to most as a child. I just was obsessed with Batman when I was a kid. What I find so interesting about him as a character is that, as far a superhero goes, he’s not superhuman, he is a person. And he is a tortured soul who is grappling with his past and trying to find a way to be in a world that has a lot that’s wrong with it and trying to find a way to reconcile all of that.”

So not a radically different take than others have had on Batman. With the screenplay getting a fresh rewrite let's hope Reeves is able to make his version of the character stand out from the rest. We'll get a look at Affleck in the suit next in Justice League on November 17th.
