Wonder Woman got off to a strong start last night with $11M in Thursday previews, fueling expectations of over $90M for the weekend. So far the reviews have been through the roof, something I'm sure DC Films is figuring out how to deal with it's so new to them, with praise being heaped on director Patty Jenkins and star Gal Gadot. While we've already heard rumblings of a sequel even before the movie opened, THR has now confirmed Jenkins and Gadot are contractually bound to return.
When the sequel happens it won't be another period piece. They won't be moving the action to WWII or anything like that. It will instead be a contemporary story. And judging by Jenkins' comments, she's not going to let success blow things out of proportion...
“What I never want to do is start phoning it in and making things just to show that I can keep my foot in the door and do big movies. I don’t care about that at all. I just want to make great movies. And that could come from any direction. It might be a $10 million movie or it might be $200 million movie.”
Jenkins doesn't sound like she's quite ready to head back to the world of superheroes just yet. One of the small projects she's considering is a limited series that may reunite her with Wonder Woman co-star, Chris Pine, and based on a story written by her husband. There's also the possibility of finally working with Ryan Gosling on I Am Superman (not a DC Comics movie), a film that has been stalled for years while Jenkins took on other work.
As for Gadot, I'm still holding out hope she pops up in the next Fast and the Furious movie. It can happen, especially in that universe. She'll actually be seen next as Wonder Woman again, this time in Zack Snyder's Justice League, opening in November.
