'Book Of Life' Director Take Over Lego Spinoff 'The Billion Brick Race'

As the Lego franchise continues to grow with The Lego Batman Movie, The Lego Ninjago Movie, and eventually The Lego Movie 2, one film that has been sortof an outlier is The Billion Brick Race. Details on the film have been scarce but we knew it was being developed by Jason Segel and Drew Pearce in what sounds like a Cannonball Run-type comedy. But now everything has changed. Segel and Pearce are apparently out, and they've been replaced by The Book of Life director, Jorge Gutierrez.

THR reports the news of Gutierrez boarding The Billion Brice Race, but there aren't any additional details. Gutierrez made a splash with The Book of Life, which earned an Oscar nomination the same year The Lego Movie was released. It earned $100M and, to me anyway, was the best animated movie of that year due to its unique visuals and heart-warming Mexican storyline. Gutierrez went on to earn an Emmy for TV series El Tigre: The Adventures of Manny Rivera.

No word on if this will interfere with Gutierrez's Book of Life sequel which was announced just weeks ago.  I hope not. Having met Gutierrez I know he's a great and humble guy, and it's nice to see him moving up in Hollywood's ranks. Here's hoping he can bring a little bit of cultural flair to the Lego family.
