The Sub-Mariner Rises from the Depths

In an interview with Collider, director Jonathan Mostow let a few details slip on the status of the Sub-Mariner superhero film he's been attatched to. For those that don't know, Namor the Sub-Mariner is one of Marvel Comics' most enduring characters. He's the king of the underwater city of Atlantis and basically rules over all the world's seas. He's been an Avenger alongside Captain America, and is also recognized as Marvel's first mutant(but he ain't no X-man).

Deveopment on the script for the film has been slow going, according to Mostow. That's understandable. Comic book writers have had a hard time nailing down any of the water-based superheroes, whether it be Namor or Aquaman. Mostow also let it be known that Namor would not and could not be in any way affiliated with the shared Marvel Universe taking place on the big screen right now amongst Captain America, The Hulk, and The Avengers. Why not? Because Namor's movie rights are owned by Universal. D'oh. Just like Spider-Man is owned by Sony, and the X-men are owned by 20th Century Fox. So get those ideas of an Invaders flick out of your mind post haste!

Personally, I think any film involving Namor is going to be a tough sell. Despite the fact he's been around for something like 50 years, he's still basically a fringe Marvel character. The fact that he's an underwater adventurer might hold some value to some, but I think people are looking for superheroes a bit more recognizable and technological. But I could be wrong.
