Monster Squad remake in development!

Finally the remake blitzkrieg of the last ten years has hit home for me and is threatining one of the movies that molded MY life. 'The Monster Squad' is a flick about a group of kids obsessed with monster movies who end up having to square off against Dracula and a host of the original Universal monsters (though they aren't the ACTUAL Universal monsters as they couldn't get the rights). This movie is what started my love for three things, the Universal Monsters, horror movies in general, and quotable movies, seriously who doesn't know the line "Wolfman's Got NARDS!". Well Rob Cohen one of the producers of the original is working to get Platinum Dunes to film a remake. This news comes from the good folks over at Deadline.com:
Rob Cohen, who produced the original, hopes to direct the remake. Cohen will produce with Platinum Dunes partners Michael Bay, Brad Fuller and Andrew Form, and they’re meeting with writers.
A group of kids who worship the classic monsters suddenly discover that Dracula is in town, and he’s got his pals Frankenstein, The Wolf Man, The Gill Man and The Mummy with him. The kids must stop their efforts to find an amulet that will give the creatures control of the world

Platinum Dunes is really vying for their position as THE home of remakes, they already have the market cornered on slasher remakes and I guess they're looking to branch out. I hope they don't screw this up and turn it into High School Musical meets Frankenstein, because I will be pissed. Here's hoping they do the right thing and maintain the charm and fun spirit that the original brought.
