Punch Drunk DVDs: 5/11/10

Legion
Who knew that God was a fan of zombie flicks? I mean, that's exactly what he's turned the supposed extinction of the human race into. The guy has an unlimited battallion of angels at his disposal, and he sends mindless human drones instead to get riddled with bullets. Paul Bettany, who seems to have found his niche in religiously tinged action flicks(he's got Priest coming up), looks a little sleepy as a fallen angel who decides to protect a woman who might be carrying humanity's last hope.

Edge of Darkness
Mel Gibson's return to the take no prisoners style that made him a household name(before he was known for spewing racist epithets) proves that he's still got the fire of a man half his age. He just needs a script that can keep up with him. Don't be fooled by the brisk trailer, this one's a political pot boiler more than anything else, but Gibson and co-star Ray Winstone are solid.

Daybreakers
The future is pretty darn bleak. Not for us humans. For us, the future is dead and gone. For the vampires who've finished us off, it's looking pretty grim as they're rapidly running out of humans to bleed dry. Daybreakers poses a pretty cool concept, one that looks at the inevitable end result of vampirism. Ethan Hawke stars as a vamp scientist desperately seeking a cure to the problem. The mystery is whether or not he's seeking answers to the same problems as his kin.

North Face
My favorite movie of 2010 has actually been out for a couple of years, but it didn't hit our shores until recently. The exhilerating true(ish) story of two German mountain climbers, daring to ascend the treacherous northern face of the Swissh Alps, a climb that had claimed more than one victim in the past. This ain't Vertical Limit, the cinematography employed here is revolutionary, making you feel as if you're hanging on by your fingernails right along with the daring duo. When I wasn't holding my breath out of fear, I was desperately gasping for more. An amazing film.

Marked for Death
It's finally on Blu-Ray! Yay! Not that you'll want it, after watching the doughy action hero snap the arm of his 100th badly accented jamaican. "Screw face? Me no no screwface!"

Toy Story 1 & 2
Just in time for the third film's release comes the animated flicks that put Pixar on the map. You don't need me to discuss how great these two movies are. They touch that part of all of us that never stopped being a kid and still wonders what it is that toys do when we aren't playing with 'em. I just hope the 3rd film is equally as great.
