3. Predators
You don't have to have been a fan of the 1987 sci-fi classic to enjoy this deliciously grim and violent sequel, featuring a surprising Adrien Brody leading a team of violent killers on an alien game preserve where they are the prey.
2. The Kids are All Right
Three wonderful performances by Julianne Moore, Annette Bening, and Mia Wasikowska highight this hilarious and emotional dramedy about a lesbian couple who find their family put to the test when their anonymous sperm donor comes a knockin'. Not only is it a funny and honest story, but it also features Julianne Moore's thong. It moves up a notch for that alone.
1. Inception
Even if this hadn't been a lukewarm summer for blockbusters, Inception would still rise above the rest as one of the smartest, most challenging and innovative movies in years. Working as science fiction, film noir, and action/thriller, it's a unique film that everyone can find a completely different reason to enjoy it.
DVD Pick of the Week: Greenberg
I'm no fan of Ben Stiller, but every now and then he hits a home run. Case in point: Greenberg, where his neurotic energy works to perfection as he plays a disturbed and troubled guy who moves back to Los Angeles to get a fresh start. There he finds that his old friends don't want anything to do with him, his family is on vacation a million miles away, and he's got nobody to bitch and complain to. That is until he meets Florence(the amazing Greta Gerwig), a young woman who's as lost as he is. Their reluctant, awkward relationship mines both comedy and emotional gold in this quirky story by Noah Baumbach(The Squid and the Whale, Margot at the Wedding).
